Cybercriminals use social engineering during holidays and important events like tax time to steal user information, according to Sherrod DeGrippo, director of threat intelligence strategy at Microsoft.
New Microsoft Thrat Intelligence Tax Season Report describes some of the different techniques that threat actors use to craft their campaigns and trick taxpayers into revealing sensitive information, making payments to fake services, or installing malicious payloads. These include phishing emails, SMS phishing (smishing), malvertising and voice phishing (vishing).
The Microsoft report also shows how Bad actors impersonate tax payment processors in phishing emails, what cybercriminals are looking for and who they are targeting, how they can obtain your data, and most importantly, how you and your organization can stay safe. Although these techniques are known and old, they nonetheless remain very effective and become even more widespread at this time of year.
DeGrippo joined our Editor-in-Chief Steve Morgan on the Cybercrime Magazine podcast to discuss tax season threats and cybersecurity tips for filers. Listen to the interview
