In a recent Techopedia interviewsafety legend Frank Abagnale offers some protection tips for Internet and smartphone users.

The advice is timely because cybercrime should be worth it $10.5 trillion by 2025, according to Cybersecurity Ventures. “Technology breeds crime. It always has been and always will be,” Abagnale said in the interview.

AI will cause a tsunami of problems due to the ability of criminals to commit all types of crimes and scams,” he added.

“There is no technology, and there will never be any technology, including AI, that can defeat social engineering,” Abagnale said. “We can only defeat social engineering through education. You need to teach the individual to recognize when they are being social engineered.

Technology can’t eliminate cybercrime, but it can help – and it’s easily accessible to most smartphone users.

“Today, every device has passkey technology. This will eventually delete usernames and passwords. This should have been done a long time ago,” Abagnale said. Passkeys are available on iPhone and Android, providing an alternative to dangerous passwords.

Frank Abagnale is one of the world’s most respected authorities on counterfeiting, embezzlement and secure documents. Her gripping story inspired Steven Spielberg’s 2002 film, Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale and Tom Hanks as the FBI agent hot on her heels.
