There are many reasons to extend the life of a laptop, not just to save money. You might want to do your part to help the environment, but without sending a valid piece of kit into the trash too soon. Maybe you like the challenge of continuing. Maybe you want to have a spare to use in an emergency or when you go somewhere you don’t want to take your old one. The following tips are especially valid if most of your computing is done in the cloud, so you basically need a working browser to be able to work. If your IT goals are similar to mine:

  • I want to be able to work from any computer.
  • I want to be able to work from any operating system.
  • I want to be able to work from anywhere.
  • I would like to have the ability to use encrypted communications.
  • I don’t want to lose any information.
  • I want to be able to find my information.

Without further ado, here’s how to get your old laptop working:

You will get better performance with more memory. If your laptop memory can be expanded, expand it as much as possible. I’m just assuming your laptop can’t take an SSD, but if so, it’s a good idea to stop the spinning drives and add SSD.

I like Pop!Os, a flavor of Ubuntu. Linux Mint is another great option.

If the old battery no longer works, get a new one.
