Intel.

Brent ConranIntel’s chief information security officer, in an interview with Cisco, said that since 1995, it does nothing other than information security.

Before that, Conran’s boss at the time said: “You are a talented programmer. Why are you going to waste your career in information security? Conran knew better and had an impressive career, including serving as CIO and CISO in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as chief security officer at McAfee, before joining Intel in March 2015.

Protecting ourselves against the threats we face today is not enough, experts say. The cybersecurity field is constantly evolving and more specialists are needed, says Conran, asserting that millions of these jobs are currently unfilledaccording to Cybersecurity Ventures.

Alexander Yampolski, CEO of SecurityScorecard, says the first defense against these threats is having an internal company structure where someone oversees cybersecurity, with that person occupying the highest levels of the organization. Just as “Chief Information Officer” and “Chief DEI Officer” have entered common business parlance over the years, “Chief Information Security Officer” (CISO) is the most common name for the cybersecurity role. Yampolskiy says only 30 percent of companies considered for the Forbes list have someone in this position.

“Someone has to be a quarterback and a cultural champion to promote cybersecurity hygiene,” he says. “If responsibility is shared between multiple people, it’s not one person at a high enough level.”

The Most Cybersecure American Companies ranks the 200 largest U.S.-based companies whose website security and cybersecurity infrastructure make them best-in-class.
