Biden to expand health care coverage for DACA recipients

President Biden on Thursday announcement plans to allow DACA recipients to enroll in a health care plan through Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Biden said in a video posted to Twitter that “health care should be a right, not a privilege.”

DHS to test expedited asylum screenings at US-Mexico border

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced its intention to test a new accelerated process for controlling asylum applicationswhich would grant asylum seekers access to legal counsel and ensure that selection interviews are conducted within 72 hours.

The experience comes ahead of an expected increase in border crossings when the United States lifts all remaining COVID-related restrictions next month, including the Title 42 public health measure.

Governor running for president Ron DeSantis has proposed a wave of severe measures to crack down on illegal immigration and combat the Biden administration’s border policies.

Among the bills expected to pass the Florida Legislature are criminal charges against anyone harboring undocumented immigrants, a policy that would strip undocumented immigrants of their driver’s licenses and a system that would require hospitals to report the immigration status of patients to the state. Critics warn the new measures will encourage racial profiling and hurt Florida’s economy.

Government officials say more Chinese migrants are seeking to enter the United States

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), at least 4,300 Chinese migrants have crossed the US-Mexico border since January, more than double the number of crossings in 2022.

Several Chinese nationals interviewed by MSNBC cited diminishing economic opportunities and widespread government corruption as reasons for fleeing their home countries.
