CNBC Reports that rapid developments in artificial intelligence could help strengthen defenses against security threats in cyberspace, according to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google.
Amid growing concerns about potentially harmful uses of AI, Pichai said intelligence tools could help governments and businesses speed up detection – and response – to threats from hostile actors.
“We are right to be concerned about the impact on cybersecurity. But AI, I actually think, counterintuitively, strengthens our cybersecurity defensePichai told delegates at the Munich Security Conference late last week.
Cyberattacks will cost the global economy an estimated $8 trillion in 2023 – a sum expected to reach $10.5 trillion by 2025according to Cybersecurity Ventures.
But Pichai said AI also reduces the time it takes for defenders to detect attacks and react against them. He said it would reduce what is called the defenders’ dilemmawhereby cyberhackers only need to succeed once in a system, while a defender must succeed every time to protect it.
“AI disproportionately helps people who are defending, because you have a tool that can have a large-scale impact versus people who are trying to exploit it,” he said. “So, in a way, we’re winning the race.”
